The Toronto Heavy Urban Search and Rescue (HUSAR) Team conducted
an off-site deployment exercise on Monday, September 26th
to Wednesday September 28, 2005 in the Town Of Whitby. The
Team operated from a self-sustaining “Base of Operations” that
housed all components of the Team including canine & technical
search, heavy breaking & breaching, shoring of structures & medical
capabilities The mock situation - at 0430 hours September
26, 2005 a tornado ripped through the Durham area along the
Taunton Road corridor. After the Region declared an emergency
to the Ontario Government - Toronto HUSAR was requested to
perform search & rescue operations in the urban area
at the SE (300 acre) section - Taunton Rd & Lake Ridge
Road. Throughout this 3 day deployment patients were successfully
extricated from 5 separate collapsed building sites. The
Team worked around the clock to obtain their search & rescue
objectives in a timely manner. The exercise began in Toronto
as the Team prepared for their mission - packing the necessary
equipment to safely deploy and transporting the equipment & Team
members to the disaster location. Once on-scene the Team
setup the Base of Operations and began re-conning and mapping
the area to determine disaster sites. The Canine and Technical
Search unit was then sent into the area to confirm live patient
locations. Upon completion of the search - rescue squads
were sent to each site to shore the structure, move, break & breach
through structural components to reach the patients. Patients
were then packaged and transported to medical facilities.
Many thanks to Whitby Fire Services for all their assistance
throughout the exercise.
