* * What is a yard? *
* *

A yard is any property whose buildings and grounds are used to:

  • conduct work related to municipal infrastructure and facility operations
  • store vehicles, equipment, machinery, tools, raw materials, and supplies
  • maintain and repair vehicles and equipment
  • house supporting functions to the above activities such as offices and stores

For the purpose of the study, a yard also includes properties that were formerly used as yards that are currently vacant and not slated for redevelopment.

Examples of yards include:

  • road operations facilities
  • winter road operations depots
  • parks maintenance facilities
  • solid waste fleet garages
  • solid waste transfer stations
  • water infrastructure repair facilities
  • vehicle fleet repair garages
  • fire equipment repair facilities
  • materials stores and warehouses

Examples of properties NOT within the scope of this study:

  • standalone fire stations, EMS stations, and police stations
  • vehicle refuelling stations not located within a yard
  • water filtration plants, treatment plants, pumping stations, etc.
  • City Hall, Metro Hall, civic centres, and other office buildings
  • yards used exclusively by agencies, boards and commissions of the City
  • vacant properties not formerly used as yards
  • former yards already designated for redevelopment
