Year 2000 Project

Year 2000 Project updates:

* Emergency preparedness a year round initiative
December 3, 1999 - After proactive communications with the public throughout 1999, City of Toronto officials are confident in both the city’s Y2K preparations and the quality of information available for Toronto residents about the issue and preparations for the turn of the century.

* Toronto Transit Commission Year 2000 Project update
December 1, 1999 - At the Toronto Transit Commission, our goal is to have all services running "business as usual" on January 1st, 2000.

* Community Outreach Program
October 18, 1999 - The city's approach to Year 2000 project communications is simple. We believe that Toronto residents, businesses and community organizations have a right to an accurate and realistic assessment of the situation and the city's Year 2000 preparations. Accordingly, we are being proactive in reaching out to the community - to inform and educate the public on the Year 2000 issue in general, and to explain precisely what the city is doing to get ready for the new millennium.

* City declares essential services Year 2000 ready
October 13, 1999 - The City of Toronto reports that the computer systems and embedded chips that operate essential public services have been remedied and tested, and are now ready for the turn of the century. The announcement, made by senior members of the city's Year 2000 project team, comes several weeks before the October 31st target date for implementation of these key systems.

* Toronto Police Service 9-1-1 System Test
July 14, 1999 - Toronto Police Service, Bell Canada and Ottawa-Carleton Regional Police test the 9-1-1 Public Emergency Response System (PERS) for year 2000 readiness.

* Toronto passes first major Year 2000 test
March 7, 1999 - Ontario Hydro successfully completed the first major year 2000 time-shift test of its high voltage transmission system in central and west-end Toronto.
