  Window safety

In the interest of child safety...
An important message to tenants, landlords and property managers The City of Toronto requires that you install mechanical safety devices on apartment windows to prevent them from opening more than 10 centimetres (four inches).

An open window is an invitation to a child...
For your child's safety, you should check that all windows have safety devices installed and are in good working order. These devices come with new windows and you can ask your landlord to install them on older ones. You should also remember that if you remove or disable these safety devices you may endanger the lives of yours or any other small child who lives in or visits your apartment.

Window screens are designed only to keep insects out of your apartment but are not strong enough to prevent children from falling through them.

If you have any questions about window safety devices, please contact your local Municipal Licensing & Standards office at:

Window Safety Tips

  • Install window safety devices on all windows two metres (six and a half feet) above the ground. These devices keep windows from opening more than 10 centimetres (four inches).

  • Place cribs, beds and other furniture away from the window.

  • Do not rely on window screens to keep kids safe. Window screens are not strong enough to prevent kids from falling out of the window.

  • Keep chairs and other objects that a child can climb on away from the railings of balconies.

  • Always supervise a child on a balcony.
