Important Notice - Prevent Frozen Blue Pipes:

  • To prevent freezing of the blue ¾” hose connected to your outside garden tap, it is necessary for a tap inside your house to be left open overnight when the temperature drops below zero
  • Please make sure the tap is opened enough for the water to circulate in order to prevent freezing
  • Loss of your water supply will occur if the hose freezes
  • To prevent overflowing, the tap should be opened enough that the stream of water is the diameter of a pencil.
  • Repeat this procedure every day/night until the hose has been disconnected from your outside tap
  • The temporary water supply does not flow through your meter, as a result, you will not be charged for the water consumed

If your property is connected with blue pipes and you have no water you can submit a no water service request for investigation online at: http://www.toronto.ca/311/, or call 311

Watermain relining

Cleaning of the watermain pipe by mechanically scraping the inside wall of the pipe to remove corroded metal and inserting a tube with resin into the existing watermain to form a new pipe wall.

Cathodic protection

Installing a sacrificial anode (magnesium cylinder) to an existing watermain so that it corrodes instead of the watermain)

If your street has sewer relining work going on, the following things may occur:

  • Multiple trenches with digging occurring at multiple locations on the site.
  • Lanes are blocked, contractors will have multiple areas with material during duration of work.
  • You will see blue pipes/hoses (PVC) on the ground coming from hydrants or another watermain to provide a temporary water source.
  • Water Relining is more cost effective then replacing the pipe and is similar to a large scale project completed by Engineering Services.
  • Pipes lie at side of the road or sidewalk, or on the curb of the boulevards
  • Steel plates used to cover excavation at end of each day
  • Small size hoses are connected to each house to temporarily supply water
  • Asphalt or wooden ramps used to cover temporary hose bibs to homes.

The water relining process:

  1. Disinfect and Install temporary water source for all residents affected by the project
  2. Excavate pits in the road to access and Isolate the watermain pipe from the water system
  3. Clean the pipe using pressure wash
  4. Inspect pipe through closed-circuit television (CCTV) to 5) Line the watermain
  5. CCTV to make sure the lining does not have and defects
  6. Disinfect pipe
  7. Reconnect water distribution systems
  8. Remove temporary bypass
  9. Restore site

Additional information:

  • This work could take up to 12- 16 weeks to complete

  • Door hangers will be provided by the contractor 24-48 hours in advance depending on the type of work or shut.

Water safety

The source of the water supply in the temporary system is the same as your underground system. Proper disinfection procedure is mandatory before the temporary system is connected to the household for consumption.
