Alternate side parking is street parking that changes monthly from one side of the street to another.

Where alternate side parking is in force, parking is typically prohibited on one side of the street from;

  • Dec. 1 to Mar. 31 and from the 1st day to the 15th day of each month from Apr. 1 to Nov. 30
  • And on the other/opposite side of the street from the 16th day to the last day of each month from Apr. 1 to Nov. 30.
  • Alternate side parking is usually in force to allow for snow clearing, street cleaning, road maintenance, etc.
  • A variation of this is where parking is prohibited on one side of the street from Dec. 1 to Mar. 31 and during the months of May, July, Sept. and Nov., and on the other side of the street during the months of Apr., June, Aug. and Oct.

Note: Parking enforcement provides a grace period before issuing tickets. For example, if the permit parking hours are 12:01 am to 7 am and the switch over date is the 15th, a person can park on the "new" side by 9 pm of the 15th. Alternatively, they must move their car by 9 am on the 16th.

Alternate side street parking permits: Council approved a Motion to allow a grace period until noon on streets with "switch over" days for resident permit parking restrictions. Those who have a residential or visitor parking permit (in good standing) and who normally need to move their vehicle to the opposite side of the street on the 15th or 30th/31st of each month by midnight (as indicated on the sign on those particular streets) now have until noon the following day

While the Bylaw requires that the vehicle be moved, the City of Toronto provides a Grace Period Cancellation for residents/visitors who failed to move their vehicle and who received a parking ticket on or before 12:01 p.m. on the day following the switch over period.
