Protecting, Maintaining and Expanding our Urban Forest

The City is investing in community-led tree planting and stewardship on private land to help reach our 40% tree canopy cover target. With the greatest potential for planting on private land, everyone’s participation is critical to achieving our tree canopy target.

There are many ways you can help, whether you are a homeowner looking to have a tree planted in your backyard, a community group looking for funding to plant trees in your neighbourhood, or just interested in learning more about trees.

The City has partnered with Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF) and the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation (TPTF) to offer a variety of programs to Toronto residents. Here are programs you can choose from:

  • Backyard Tree Planting Program: LEAF offers backyard tree planting services to Toronto residents at a subsidized cost. This includes a full service option (in-person consultation, delivery and planting), and a do-it-yourself option.
  • Tree For Me: TPTF offers trees and grants to local community groups to host Tree For Me events in their neighbourhood where residents can be matched with a tree at no cost.
  • Community Grants: TPTF offers grants to support community-led tree planting and stewardship on private land.
