Dr. Jennifer McKelvie was elected in 2018 as the Toronto City Councillor for Scarborough Rouge-Park. After being elected to her second term of office in 2022, Jennifer was appointed Deputy Mayor, and in this capacity, assumed the responsibilities of the Office of the Mayor during its vacancy from February to July of 2023.

Deputy Mayor McKelvie also serves as Chair of the Infrastructure and Environment Committee tasked with advancing Toronto’s climate action, ravine and vision zero strategies. She also sits on the Board of the Green Municipal Fund for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, supporting municipalities across Canada to adopt sustainable practices.

Prior to her election, Dr. McKelvie was a Professional Geoscientist and managed research partnerships at the Nuclear Waste Management Organization and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. Her peer-reviewed research has been cited more than 1200 times and was supported by numerous national and international awards, including the L’Oréal/UNESCO Women in Science Fellowship.

Locally, the Deputy Mayor has a long-standing record of community service advocating for greater investment in Scarborough, including as past president of the Scarborough Community Renewal Organization and Centennial Community & Recreation Association.
