The City of Toronto has leased 731 Runnymede Road for use as a men’s shelter as part of the George Street Revitalization project. The shelter was approved by Council in October 2016 and is expected to be ready for move-in during Fall 2019. Construction is currently underway. To start, there will be 50 beds, with the flexibility to add capacity as needed.
In spring 2016, Shelter, Support and Housing Administration (SSHA) participated in three community town hall meetings to share information and respond to questions.
In summer 2016, a Community Liaison Committee (CLC) began to act in an advisory capacity as a link between the shelter and the neighbouring community, providing input to help ensure a successful program launch. The CLC members were residents, local service agencies, Councillors for Wards 11 and 13, and City staff. The CLC wrapped up in February 2018.
A new EMBRACE committee launched in spring 2018 to focus on creating opportunities to positively integrate the new shelter with the community. EMBRACE members and shelter staff address neighbourhood engagement, recreational activities, employment and volunteer opportunities, workshops and other events. EMBRACE Runnymede is co-chaired by City staff and a community representative, with the committee open to residents, businesses, agencies, faith organizations, or other individuals or groups who want to support the Runnymede Shelter. Members are asked to participate for a year (approximately six to eight meetings) and to renew their participation in the committee annually.
