Ethan* had been struggling for some time to find a job and establish a career path. He had an avid interest in technology, and realized he’d have to do post-secondary studies if he wanted to work in this field. But he didn’t know to get on track and move forward.

Ethan’s caseworker at Toronto Employment and Social Services suggested he consider applying to the Helping Youth Pursue Education (HYPE) Program at Centennial College. The program was created to help marginalized youth 17 to 29 years old who live in underserved areas of Toronto overcome the barriers they face accessing post-secondary education.

Ethan applied to the six-week HYPE program and was accepted to participate in a cohort focused on information technology.

Completing the program has given Ethan new confidence, and he is now continuing on with post-secondary education. He was also successful finding a part-time job where he can earn money while attending school.
