Very few forums exist for the public to express their reactions to museum exhibitions. But the Institute of Institutional Critique (TIIC) imagines a space where the public’s feedback can be enacted in real time. In collaboration with the Bata Shoe Museum, TIIC will present “Draft 2,” an interactive installation based on the Bata’s current exhibition “WANT: Desire, Design and Depression Era Footwear.” A life-size maquette mirroring “WANT” will be the basis for a publicly generated second draft of that exhibition. Each participant’s additions, subtractions and abstentions to the project will be recorded. All will impact the evolution of the installation throughout the evening. TIIC’s staff will also be on site to perform the role of the institution and facilitate critiques of the exhibition. By providing access to an institution (albeit a fake one), “Draft 2” will present an opportunity for a joint exchange of knowledge between institutions and the public.
The Institute of Institutional Critique™ (TIIC) is a fictional institution created to critique itself. By creating projects that prioritize public participation, TIIC questions the possibilities and impossibilities of meaningful institutional critique. Together, TIIC’s founders, Mattia Zylak and Florence Yee, also work as the institute’s co-directors, curators, technicians, communications coordinators and unpaid interns.
TIIC would like to acknowledge the support of the Bata Shoe Museum, especially the generous guidance of Sheila Knox and Elizabeth Semmelhack.
