The Project

ApHeart is a movement meditation for our times – a physical ritual to express kinship with the earth through an improvised collaborative framework of communal creativity. It is a celebration of the older dancer and the wisdom of embodiment expressed through decades of practice – in relation to each other and to nature. It is a celebration of diversity within the community through dance and the lived history of each senior dancer, musician and community mover who performs the work. Individual voices are illuminated through the ApHeart experience and together the ensemble offers a sense of hope and unity. ApHeart speaks through the body to celebrate our humanity and the earth we inhabit.

The Artists

Julia Aplin, Carol Anderson and Claudia Moore – senior luminaries of the Toronto dance scene – joined forces to create ApHeart during lockdown when the need to move with community led them to creatively explore new structures, forms and locations. Supported by Moonhorse Dance Theatre, ApHeart was first performed in August 2020 by a diverse cast of acclaimed dancers and musicians. Since then, ApHeart has been presented by various organizations including FLIGHT Festival (PEC) for ensembles of professional and community dancers.

Acknowledgements

The ApHeart team would like to thank Moonhorse Dance Theatre for supporting the work and acknowledges every dance artist, musician and community performer who contributes to the ongoing evolution of the project.
