The Project

"Luminous Trails" is an interactive augmented reality experience that explores the intersections of collective lived memory, encounters in public spaces, and the emotional landscapes of a city. Participants are encouraged to create virtual trails as they navigate the city of Toronto during Nuit Blanche. When trails cross paths, the intersections are visualized as bodies of water and mystical ceremonial landmarks. The application invites visitors to gather over these bodies of water as places for introspection and virtual encounters. In order to participate, users need an active internet connection on an iPhone device to download the app through the iOS AppStore. Once they have launched the app, and allowed their location to be shared, they can start creating virtual trails using a simple button. Participants can also interact with the virtual worlds created by others over the course of the night by simply viewing them on their phone.
