The City of Toronto continues its pothole repair blitz today, Saturday, May 9. This is the second of three scheduled repair blitzes in May to help keep roads safe and in a good state of repair. The final blitz this month is scheduled for May 23, weather permitting.
Crews, which have been repairing potholes since early this morning as part of today’s blitz, have been busy all spring repairing as many potholes as possible on Toronto’s expressways, major roads, bike lanes and neighbourhood streets. Already this year, staff have fixed more than 93,000 potholes while making daily repairs.
Residents driving or biking today are advised to expect minor delays around pothole repair work. The public is asked to be safe by respecting work zones and giving crews space while they make repairs.
Today’s event will see 64 crews and 144 people repairing potholes throughout the city. City staff will work a 12-hour shift with appropriate physical distancing measures in place due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Potholes can generally be repaired within four days of being reported. When there are large numbers of potholes to be repaired, they are triaged based on size, and repairs are prioritized on major roads first.
The City has a comprehensive road maintenance program and has budgeted nearly $220 million in 2020 for road repairs, rehabilitation and maintenance work, including between $4 million and $5 million to fix potholes. Each pothole costs approximately $25 to repair.
