Subject: Variances to the Etobicoke Sign By-law
Purpose:
To advise Etobicoke Community Council of the decisions of the Sign Variance Advisory Committee at its meeting held on August 24, 1999.
Funding Sources, Financial Implications and Impact Statement:
Not applicable.
Recommendation:
That the recommendations of the Etobicoke Sign Variance Advisory Committee with respect to the following applications for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law be received for information:
(1) Chapters, 1950 The Queensway (Lakeshore-Queensway);
(2) Hillside Montessori School, 106 Ravenscrest Drive (Markland-Centennial); and
(3) Travelodge Hotel, 925 Dixon Road (Rexdale-Thistletown).
Comments and/or Discussion and/or Justification:
The Sign Variance Advisory Committee at its meeting held on Tuesday, August 24, 1999, had before it for consideration the foregoing applications for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law. The Committee’s decisions are as follows:
1. Chapters, 1950 The Queensway
That an application by Steel Art Signs Corp., on behalf of Chapters Bookstore, for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law to permit signage for a new Chapters location at 1950 The Queensway, be approved as follows:
(i) an identification ground sign, having a display area of 6.58 m² and a height of 6.55 m; and
(ii) a fascia sign having a display area of 3.33 m² on the east elevation, not facing a street.
2. Hillside Montessori School, 106 Ravenscrest Drive
That an application by Ms. Diana Pace-Asciak, on behalf of Hillside Montessori School, for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law to permit a second, double-sided non-illuminated ground sign, having a display area of 1.12 m² and a maximum height of 1.9 m, to identify a day care facility in an existing church at 106 Ravenscrest Drive, be approved, subject to the issuance of a permit.
3. Travelodge Hotel, 925 Dixon Road
That an application by National Sign & Awning, on behalf of Travelodge Hotel, for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law to permit the installation of three fascia signs exceeding the permitted display area, to identify the new ownership of an existing hotel at 925 Dixon Road, be approved as follows:
(i) two identification fascia signs to be located on the east and west elevations between the 13th and 14th floors of the 17-storey hotel, each having a display area of 18 m²; and
(ii) one 18 m² fascia sign on the south facade of the mechanical penthouse.
The foregoing decisions are in accordance with the recommendations contained in the attached reports submitted by the Deputy Chief Building Official, Etobicoke District.
