Subject: Tree Removal at Heron Park Recreation Centre

Ward 16 -Scarborough Highland Creek

Purpose:

To inform, Scarborough Community Council, in accordance with the Policy and Procedure for Tree Preservation on Parkland, of the proposed removal of healthy trees to allow for the Redevelopment of the Heron Park Recreation Centre site which has been in the Capital Planning process since 1997.

Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

No financial implication from the adopton of this report.

Recommendations:

It is recommended that sixty-six (66) trees located within the proposed scope of work, be removed and that ninety (90) new native trees each with a trunk diameter of 80 to 100 mm be planted as replacements for the removed trees at this site.

Background:

The redevelopment of the Heron Park Recreation Centre site includes the addition of a community centre to an existing arena and pool. The existing pool is to be replaced and the arena is to be modified. Work is scheduled to begin this autumn and continue into the year 2000.

The full Heron Park site is heavily treed. In order for the community centre to be added to the existing facility sicty-six (66) trees must be removed to allow for the addition.

Comments:

In order for the Heron Park Recreation Centre project to proceed sixty-six (66) trees must be removed (Attachment No. 1). Throughout the project design phase community consultation has been obtained. Through this process the community have been notified that it will be necessary for trees to be removed and no concerns were identified by the community.

Conclusions:

The removal of the sixty-six (66)trees will allow for the redevelopment of the Heron Park Recreation Centre. Ten (10) of these trees are unhealthy. A total of nine (9)trees are scheduled to be transplanted. There will be at least two hundred and seventeen (217) existing trees being preserved on the site. In total, upon project completion, the site will contain over three hundred (300) trees.
