A diverse range of volunteer opportunities at Toronto’s outside-the-core Cultural Centres and Galleries are available, including Gallery Assistants, Marketing & Promotion Assistants, Special Project Assistants and Committee Members, Volunteer Gardeners, Ushers and more.

Volunteering at a Cultural Centre or Gallery is a fun and exciting way for students to earn community service hours. Applicable positions are labeled below.

Marketing & Promotion Volunteers are integral to Assembly Hall’s creative projects and community engagement. Applications are accepted at any time but are reviewed annually on July 1.

This position is open to students looking to earn community service hours. Etobicoke residents aged 16 and up are encouraged to apply.

Duties

Duties include helping execute marketing and promotional initiatives to support Assembly Hall offerings. This may include tasks like flyer-distribution within the community and submitting Assembly Hall events into free online listing platforms.

Assembly Hall, 1 Colonel Samuel Smith Park Drive, Etobicoke

Time Commitment

This working group meets approximately four to five times a year or at the call of the working group lead. Meetings are held onsite at Assembly Hall or virtually.

This volunteer position requires a minimum two-year commitment.

Selection Criteria

Although no one individual is required to meet every item on this list, the following criteria will be used to select new members who can best serve the needs of the working group:

  • Awareness of Assembly Hall programs
  • Demonstrate an interest and knowledge of the South Etobicoke community
  • Willing and able to devote the required time to Assembly Hall working group meetings and special initiatives
  • Commitment to providing accessible experiences for all
  • Demonstrate good listening skills, open-mindedness, sound judgement and tact

Additionally, specific interest, knowledge and/or background in one or more of the following areas, would be an asset, but not required:

  • Visual and/or performing arts
  • Community engagement
  • Marketing best-practices
  • Social media and maintaining online presence

Student Volunteer positions are available on this working group, to assist with the following task:

  • Promotional material distribution

Duties include assisting with programing and production of a variety of projects, including volunteer appreciation events, the annual ‘Tis the Season Open House and other large-scale events.

This working group meets approximately four to five times a year or at the call of the working group lead. Meetings are held onsite at Assembly Hall or virtually. Additionally, this working group works onsite to prepare for and execute special events.

This volunteer position requires a minimum two-year commitment.

  • Awareness of Assembly Hall programs
  • Demonstrate an interest and knowledge of the South Etobicoke community

Volunteer Gardeners are integral for the up-keep and beautification of Assembly Hall’s surrounding gardens. Applications are accepted at any time but are reviewed annually on July 1.

Duties

Duties include working on the surrounding gardens in spring, summer and fall seasons by assisting with clean-up, weeding and planting as required.

Assembly Hall is a popular venue for performances, film festivals, public meetings and much more. Volunteer Ushers play an important role at these varied events, enabling us to offer accessible entertainment to the community. Groups who have presented at Assembly Hall include Theatre Etobicoke, Lakeshorts International Short Film Festival, Voices Rock Canada and BALKANTO.

Applications are accepted at any time, however will be reviewed annually on July 1. This position is open to students looking to earn community service hours. Etobicoke residents aged 16 and up are encouraged to apply.

Duties

  • Ticket-taking and program distribution
  • Helping patrons find their seats
  • Providing facility information (i.e. washrooms, box office, coat-rack locations, etc.)
  • Assisting staff with concession sales during intermission
  • Assisting with Assembly Hall activities and programs

  • Demonstrate good listening skills, open-mindedness, sound judgement and tact
  • Previous experience working as an usher desired but not essential
