* * Fish and Mercury Fish and shellfish are an important part of eating healthy. They contain protein, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and omega-3 fats. Eating fish can help reduce the risk of heart disease. It also helps children's brains and eyes to grow and develop.

However, some types of fish contain mercury — a toxin that is harmful to our bodies. Be careful and choose fish that are low in mercury if you are:
  • A woman who could become pregnant, including teenage girls
  • Pregnant
  • Breastfeeding
  • A child
