Members of the Board of Management of the Toronto Zoo and Staff:  Please keep this agenda and the accompanying material until the Board meeting dealing with these matters has ended.  The City Clerk’s Office will not provide additional copies.

It is recommended that the contract for architectural, engineering and project management services for the Animal Health Centre schematic design and detailed design, be awarded to Diamond & Schmitt Architects Inc./Design Level in the amount of $1,042,650.00 including fees and disbursements and all applicable taxes plus a 10% design contingency allowance.

Recommendations

It is recommended that the contract for Capital Campaign Management and Consulting Services for the Capital Campaign project be awarded to Ketchum Canada Inc., including:

 

1.         the first phase amounting to $180,000 for 2010; and

 

2.         subsequent phases amounting to a total of $951,500, subject to approval of the 2011-2013 annual operating  budgets.

Summary

This report recommends the award of the contract for Capital Campaign Management and Consulting Services.

Financial Impact

There are no financial implications to the report, as the required funds for 2010 are included within the approved 2010 Operating Budget. The funds required for the balance of the campaign will be requested and spent subject to the approval of future operating budget submissions.

Giant Panda Update

Recommendations

It is recommended that a delegation of up to three members of the Giant Panda Acquisition Task Force (Dr. Cheung, Dr. Cho, G. Mammoliti) and up to two Zoo staff members (J. Tracogna, W. Rapley) travel to China in the fall of 2010 to meet with Chinese officials and begin negotiations for a Giant Panda Co-operation and Research project, and this travel be approved at an estimated cost of $7,000 per person to be funded from the 2010 Operating Budget.

Summary
This report provides a summary of recent developments regarding the Giant Panda project and recommends that the Toronto Zoo join the Calgary Zoo and Granby Zoo in a delegation to China in the fall of 2010 to begin negotiations.  The project has gained momentum following the Prime Minister’s public announcement of support and the Governor General’s recent visit to a panda breeding centre in China.  October 2010 will mark the 40th anniversary of Canada and China relations.  In the next few months the Toronto Zoo will be ready to meet with the Chinese representatives and formalize discussions to date.

Each year the Zoo advertises in several bi-weekly cultural newspapers to reach new families in these communities and encourage visits to the Zoo during the summer months.  In 2010, the plan has full-colour, quarter-page ads, in the language of the paper, featuring the Sharks at Stingray Bay exhibit and a $5 off admission coupon in ten (10) publications.
