Subject:Days of Religious Observance to be considered in setting schedules for meetings

Financial Implications:
There are no immediate financial implications:
Recommendations:
It is recommended:
That the attached schedule of 1998 and 1999 religious holidays as well as observances by the aboriginal and first nations
be received.
Background:
At its meeting on April 16, City Council directed that a report be submitted to the Corporate Services Committee on the
days of religious observance that should be considered in preparing the schedule of meetings for Council, Community
Councils, Standing Committees and other Committees.
Discussion:
The attached schedule of 1998 and 1999 religious holidays was prepared by the Ontario Public Service in consultation
with leaders and representatives of various faiths. Earlier editions of this Schedule have been used by various
municipalities to give effect to religious observance policies for employees. In addition to this Schedule, observances by
the aboriginal and first nations peoples are covered by the religious observance policy for employees. An Access Calendar
(1995, revised 1997) was prepared by the Equal Opportunity Program for use by departments in recognising the diversity
among Toronto=s communities.
Conclusion:
The practice of recognising days which are significant to Toronto=s diverse communities continues to be an important
corporate principle.
