To:Etobicoke Community Council
From:Dominic Gulli, Interim Co-ordinator of Community Council
Subject:Sheldon Avenue Water Supply
Lakeshore-Queensway
Purpose:
To respond to a request of Etobicoke Community Council, at its meeting held May 27,
1998, to report on correspondence received from Councillor Irene Jones,
Lakeshore-Queensway requesting that watermain improvements on Sheldon Avenue be
moved forward to 1999.
Funding Sources:
The Waterworks Programme of the Capital Budget will be used to fund this project.
Recommendations:
It is recommended that this report be received for information purposes.
Background:
The rusty water problem identified along Sheldon Avenue (Attachment No. 1) is caused by
internal pipe corrosion of the watermain. This problem is prevalent in many areas of the
former City of Etobicoke and is being addressed through the Watermain Cleaning and
Lining Programme as part of a long-term water distribution system rehabilitation strategy.
This programme involves removing the internal corrosion from the pipe and placing a thin
cement mortar coating inside the pipe to prevent further corrosion. Addressing the problem
identified along one street usually requires cleaning and lining of watermains along other
streets surrounding the problem area. In the short-term, our Operations Division staff
conduct routine flushing of watermains in problem areas to reduce the occurrence of rusty
water.
Comments:
The rusty water problem identified along Sheldon Avenue is common to many areas within
the former City of Etobicoke and due to limited budgets, we are addressing these problems
on a priority basis.
The Sheldon Avenue area is not scheduled for rehabilitation until after the year 2002. We
will, however, make every effort to consider this area for inclusion in the 1999 Capital
Budget as part of the Watermain Cleaning and Lining Programme. In the short-term, our
Operations Division staff will continue to carry out routine flushing of the watermain along
Sheldon Avenue.
Conclusions:
The Sheldon Avenue area is not scheduled for rehabilitation until after the year 2002. We
will, however, make every effort to consider this area for inclusion in the 1999 Capital
Budget as part of the Watermain Cleaning and Lining Programme.
