Subject: Prince Edward Dr. Bike Lanes
30 Jul 98
Councillor Brown,
I have been reading with some concern media reports of the proposed repaving of Prince Edward Dr. As a frequent bicycle
user and commuter I am troubled by the area's ratepayer's groups urging that bicycle lanes not be included in the repaving
of Prince Edward Dr.
In the last few years, the City of Toronto has been very active in extending the number of bike routes throughout the city in
recognition of the increasing number of bicycles in use. Bike routes provide some measure of separation of motor vehicles
and bikes. The number of cyclists killed and injured after collision with the growing number of autos in this city proves that
the utmost must be done to protect bike users.
How then can the Etobicoke Community Council even consider passing up the opportunity of extending bike lanes on this
well-used street. Bicyclists on Prince Edward Dr. must contend with not only autos but also T.T.C. buses that must
presently cross into the oncoming lane to safely pass cyclists. With the introduction of bike lanes, this unsafe act would be
eliminated.
Vocal opponents within the ratepayer's association have stated that bicycle lanes are unnecessary because bikes have every
right to their share of the roadway. While it is true, this sharing often leads to dangerous brushes between bicycles and cars.
I urge you to provide the safest possible road for all users, including bicyclists, on Prince Edward Dr. If speed is such a
concern to residents, the police have proven that radar blitzes on area roads work well in reducing speed. Please remember
that the roads are for all users, not just those that live along them.
Who will take responsibility when the first cyclist is crushed under the wheels of a T.T.C. bus just because those extra two
feet weren't provided.
Please help prevent that from ever happening.
Thank You,
Jon Lasiuk
