Subject:63 Strathcona Avenue, Toronto, Ward 25 (Don River) - Municipal Code, Chapter
331, Article III, Trees
Purpose:
An application for a permit to remove two trees on private property that the applicant feels
are too close to the house and have branches that fall onto the deck and into the rear yard has
been filed by the owner, 63 Strathcona Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M4J 1G9.
Recommendations:
Either 1, 2 or 3 below.
1) Issue a permit for the removal of the Manitoba maple tree, but refuse to issue a permit for
the removal of the elm tree.
2) Refuse to issue a permit for the removal of both trees.
3) Issue a permit for the removal of both trees.
Comments:
The trees in question are a thirty-six centimetre diameter Manitoba maple and a fifty
centimetre diameter American elm, both in fair condition. The two trees are growing within
a metre of one another and are located along the west property line approximately five
metres south of the house. Neither tree meets the criteria for an exemption under Article III,
Chapter 331 of the City of Toronto Municipal Code. If the Manitoba maple were to be
removed, the weaker wooded of the two species, there would not be a significant loss in
terms of tree cover in the neighbourhood and the native elm tree would benefit as a result.
A notice of application sign was posted on the property for the required 14 day posting
period, in order to notify the neighbourhood and provide an opportunity for objection to the
application. No written objections were received in response to the application to remove the
tree in question.
