 July 3, 1998

 To:Works and Utilities Committee

From:Angelos Bacopoulos, General Manager of Solid Waste Management Services

Subject:Provision of a Standard Garbage and Recycling Collection Calendar

 Purpose:

To provide all residences of eight units or less, which receive curbside collection in the City of Toronto, with a garbage and recycling collection calendar in a consistent format in 1999.

Funding Sources, Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

The publication of a consistent garbage collection calendar will have no impact on the City's expenditures because costs of calendar publication are included in the approved Operating Budget.

 Recommendations:

It is recommended that this report be received for information.

 Council Reference/Background/History:

Each of the Community Council Areas publishes a garbage and recycling collection calendar. All of these calendars vary in their design and the detailed information provided to the public.

 Comments and/or Discussion and/or Justification:

In 1999 it is proposed to produce and distribute a garbage and recycling calendar in a standard format for the entire City. A section of the calendar will provide information concerning the specific collection practices and by-laws for each of the Community Council Areas in which the calendar is distributed. In producing this calendar, the existing levels of service will be shown for each Community Council Area.

If, during 1999, City Council decides to change the service levels for garbage, yard waste and recycling collection, supplementary collection calendars will be published as needed. Notification of any other minor service level adjustments which may result from the consolidation and rationalization of operations, and which may involve changes in collection days to particular neighbourhoods or streets, will also be provided through the limited distribution of notices and schedules. Table 1 attached shows the existing service levels for residences of eight units and less which receive curbside collection service for each of the Community Council Areas.

Conclusions:

The publication of a single garbage and recycling collection calendar in 1999 will provide a consistent message regarding appropriate methods of waste management to all residents of the City.
