(February 4, 1998) from Councillor Frances Nunziata, Ward 27, York - Humber
Please find attached a copy of a letter I received from the Toronto Transit Commission in reference to considering service improvements in York-Humber and York-Eglinton.
I would like to have this item added to the agenda of our next Community Council meeting this month for discussion and consideration of convening a public meeting on the issue.
Thank you.
(January 30, 1998) From the Chief General Manager, Toronto Transit Commission to Councillor Frances Nunziata
I am writing to ask for any proposals you have to improve transit service in your ward, so that we may evaluate them in developing our 1999 Service Plan. If you have any such proposals, could you please send them to me by Friday, April 3, 1998. TTC Service Planning staff will contact your office in the next few weeks to discuss the planning process for TTC services and to help you with any specific proposals you may have. If you would like further information regarding the planning of TTC services or the development of the TTC=s annual Service Plan, please contact Mitch Stambler, Manager - Service Planning, at 393-4460.
As you know, the TTC was forced to considerably reduce service two years ago as a result of reductions in funding. At this time, we are uncertain about our funding for 1998 and 1999, but we believe that there will be no additional money available for new services. Still, we must, and will, maintain our commitment to provide the most convenient and attractive transit service possible, within our approved level of funding, for all people travelling in he City of Toronto.
We are looking for ways to increase ridership on the TTC by improving service while maintaining or reducing costs. We can achieve this by reducing the distance that customers walk to transit service, reducing the number of transfer they need to make, or improving their travel time. I am asking for your ideas on this, because you are in touch with the travel needs of your constituents.
I am making this request for input to all Toronto councillors, individually, but it would be helpful to us if you could co-ordinate your requests for service changes with the other councillor for your ward. April, after we have assembled the proposal received from the councillors, we will be holding a public meeting to receive further input directly from our customers. The meeting will provide customers with an overview of the proposals received from councillors, and we will consider the comments that are made by the public at the meeting in our evaluation of the proposals.
I look forward to receiving your suggestions for improvements to transit service in Toronto.
