2. YORK HISTORICAL COMMITTEE

From Bernie Thompson, Chair, York Historical Committee

(March 10, 1998)

AWe, the Historical Committee, would like to be added to the Agenda for the April first meeting of the York Community Council.

There are a number of items we would like to discuss and others we would like to bring to the attention of the Council. Also, we will need direction as to the future of the Historical Committee, the Museum, and the plans in the works.

Items to discuss:

The Open House, planning involved, invitation list, costs and additional services needed to display the AIvorex and Bossuns@ collection.

A budget process for the museum, prepared by the Historical Committee.

What is being done as to a full time curator. (Reference Clause No. 271 embodied in Report No. 27 of the Administrative Services Committee (December 1, 1997) which was adopted by the former Council of the City of York at its meeting held on December 9, 1997. On file in the Clerk=s Office, York Civic Service Centre)

Will we be operating under the Parks and Recreation Department through the Culture Section or remain under the Clerk=s Department.

Request for direction, where do we stand, where are we going?

What is Council=s position as to the Heritage programs.

The last twelve years, we have requested more room for the museum, nothing has been done. We would like to be considered for the Old Police Station when Y-Casp moves out. This location is already being used for archival storage in the holding cells downstairs. The main floor would provide an ideal location for the museum, workshops, tours, and presentations could be provided to all groups. Rumour has it that the Animal Shelter is going to take over the building. We believe our need is much greater and a heritage building should not Ago to the dogs@, pun intended.

Hoping our request to meet with Council is approved, we remain.@

(All relevant information is on file in the Clerk=s Office, York Civic Service Centre.)
