6.REQUEST FROM THE TORONTO EXTRICATION TEAM FOR A
DONATION, REGARDING ATTENDANCE AT THE 1998 INTERNATIONAL
AUTO EXTRICATION COMPETITION AND LEARNING SYMPOSIUM,
ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
Clause 23 (c) in Report No. 8 of the York Community Council which was referred back by
Council on July 29, 30, and 31, 1998.
23. (c)The York Community Council reports having expressed its support for the Team's
participation in the subject event, and having requested the Grants Review Committee to
approve the donation of $2,500.00.
The Community Council had before it the following communications:
(i)(July 17, 1998) from Councillor Nunziata advising that Firefighter First Class,
LorneBabiuk, wished to make a deputation to the Community Council; and
(ii)(July 15, 1998) from Firefighter First Class, Lorne Babiuk, advising that the team had
qualified to compete at the abovementioned competition and learning symposium, that funds
are being raised through various events and contributions from local businesses, and
requesting that the Community Council give consideration to donating $2,500.00 to assist
with the costs associated with the team's participation.
Firefighter Dan Ramsay appeared before the Community Council in connection with the
foregoing matter.
(The Municipal Grants Review Committee on July 27, 1998 had before it a communication
(July 23, 1998) from the City Clerk advising that the York Community Council on July 22,
1998, had before it a letter (July 15, 1998) from Firefighter Lorne Babiuk, Toronto Fire
Services, York Division, indicating that the Toronto Extrication Team qualified to complete
at the 1998 International Auto Extrication Competition and Learning Symposium, to be held
in Rockford, Illinois, from September 20-26, 1998; and advising that the York Community
Council recommended that the Municipal Grants Review Committee approve the request
from the Toronto Extrication Team for a donation in the amount of $2,500.00 to assist with
the costs associated with the team's participation in the competition and symposium.
The Committee received the aforementioned communication, in that the request does not
meet the criteria for grants funding; and further requested the Commissioner of Community
and Neighbourhood Services to raise the matter of this funding request with the Fire Chief.
