Variance from Chapter 297, Signs,
of The City of Toronto Municipal Code -
1669 Queen Street East (East Toronto)
The Toronto Community Council recommends the adoption of the following report (April 22, 1998) from the
Commissioner of Urban Planning and Development Services:
Purpose:
To permit an extension of conditions applied to previously approved variances for two illuminated fascia signs and two
illuminated ground signs.
Funding Sources, Financial Implications and Impact Statement:
Not applicable.
Recommendations:
It is recommended that:
(1)City Council approve Application No.998035 respecting minor variances from Chapter 297, Signs, of the City of
Toronto Municipal Code to permit an extension of conditions applied to previously approved variances for two illuminated
fascia signs and two illuminated ground signs on condition that:
(a)the signs be permitted for a further period of 12 months from the date of City Council approval; and
(b)the signs be illuminated only between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. and that this be achieved by means of an
automatic device.
(2)The applicant be advised, upon approval of Application No. 998035, of the requirement to obtain the necessary
permits from the Commissioner of Urban Planning and Development Services.
Comments:
At its meeting dated April 14, 1997, the former City of Toronto Council gave approval to a minor variance application to
permit nine illuminated ground signs and two illuminated fascia signs for a temporary period of 12 months in order to
market future residential properties which have been approved for this site. The applicant has recently advised me that the
signs are required for an additional 12 months because of the phased nature of the development.
I am recommending approval of this application to permit the extension of conditions of previously approved variances, as
I find the variances requested remain minor and within the general intent and purpose of the sign provisions of the
Municipal Code.
