Announcements:
- ARC breakfast on Wed. 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM re: bike lanes on Spadina

- circulated info on ad in personals in the Globe and Mail (date unknown) re "bicycle terrorists
invading sidewalks"
1. Discussion of sidewalk riding sticker campaign: Subcommittee decided to recommend
the logo with the triangle on it but recommended changing the graphic to a person walking a
bicycle.
2. Transit Shelter Ads: The Urban Planning and Development Services has been allocated
the use of free transit advertising space for the Right Turns and Bikes campaign for the period
starting July 5, 1999. The subcommittee decided to refer the text that will accompany this
campaign to the Bike Planning Subcommittee and the Bike Commuter Subcommittee for
immediate feedback.
3. SmartRisk Foundation: The subcommittee decided to invite Dr. Robert Conn to a Cycling
Committee meeting to present the results of a new study on the "Economic Burden of
Unintentional Injury in Canada" and it's relationship to the work being undertaken by the
Cycling Committee on preventing injuries due to motor vehicle crashes.
4. Ongoing Review of the Coroner's Report:
Recommendations #1 - 5: Better Bicycle Collision Data Collection and Analysis
- Police and other City Departments should provide input on the implementation of these
recommendations.
- Recommendation #4 - Steve Beiko will get a copy of a report from ProBike on a
comprehensive study of bicycle usage and collisionsfor consideration.
- Recommendation # 5 - should be established now so that the annual review is complete
prior to the start of the cycling season in the next year. This would give the Cycling
Committee needed information to design and evaluate programs.
- discussed the idea of inviting staff involved in data collection and analysis attend a meeting
to share information and concerns.
Education Programs and Enforcement for Both Motorists and Cyclists
Recommendations #6 - #11: Continue discussion needed in terms of education and public
awareness campaigns for the new City of Toronto.
A Review of the Highway Traffic Act Sections Affecting Bicycles:
Recommendation #12:
- continue staff discussions with the Ministry of Transportation to take the lead in the review
Roadway Engineering Design Improvements for Bicycles:
Recommendation #14:
- discussion of this recommendation needs to take place in conjunction with the Bike Plan

Investigation of Design Modifications for Large Vehicles to Reduce Injury Severity:
Recommendation #15:
- the Education and Safety Subcommittee does not have the expertise to research this area.
