Subject: No Sidewalk Riding Sticker Program
At its meeting of July 27, 1998, the Toronto Cycling Committee requested the Education and Safety Sub-Committee to
review the issues regarding the "No Sidewalk Riding" sticker program and to report back on other options to address
cycling/pedestrian safety.
At this time, the Education and Safety Sub-Committee decided to develop an alternative sticker for consideration, as one
part of a program to address the concerns of pedestrians about sidewalk cycling. For easy reference, Attachment "A" is a
copy of the original sticker. Attachment "B" contains Design Options Nos. 1 and 2 for a sticker to go on bicycle post and
ring parking racks and in other problem locations. These stickers were developed after the Education and Safety
Sub-Committee met with ARC and CBN on this matter and other issues. It incorporates a positive representation, and if
approved, would be printed for installation next spring. The sticker would be blue and white in keeping with other bicycle
signs used in Toronto. In addition, the stickers would also be printed in as many languages as the budget will allow. These
non-English stickers would be affixed in designated retail locations recommended through the City's Public Information
Translation Services.
The Education and Safety Sub-Committee recognizes the importance of working cooperatively with the Toronto
Pedestrian Committee and other community groups in the development and implementation of cycling/pedestrian safety
programs, including this initiative.
The Education and Safety Sub-Committee recommends that the Toronto Cycling Committee adopt Design Option No. 1
as the new sticker for the "No Sidewalk Riding" program, and that the graphic be amended by replacing the standing
figure with a representation of a person walking.
