May 24, 1999

To:Toronto Cycling Committee

From:Mr. Jack Becker, Acting Chair

Network Planning and Facilities Sub-Committee

Subject:Toronto Cycling Map

Purpose:

To obtain the Toronto Cycling Committee's input and endorsement of recommendations for the next Toronto Cycling Map printing expected to be in the first quarter of the year 2000.

Recommendation:

It is recommended that the Toronto Cycling Committee request the Commissioner of Economic Development, Culture and Tourism to include the recommendations, titled "Toronto Cycling Map 2000 --Recommendations" and "Additional Recommendations to the Toronto Cycling Map 2000 -- Recommendations from the Network Planning and Facilities Sub-Committee", in the next revision and printing of the Toronto Cycling Map.

Background:

In 1996/1997, Metropolitan Parks and Culture, the Independent Bicycle Dealers' Association, and the Metropolitan Cycling Committee worked together to produce a cycling map. Since that time, there have been many new cycling facilities built within the City. Also, feedback and recommendations to improve the map have been received from cyclists. The existing map has become outdated and needs revising. The Parks and Recreation Division, Economic Development, Culture and Tourism, is prepared to produce an update to the map. The Department is prepared to undertake raising money from advertisement for printing the map. The Toronto Cycling Committee is expected to provide input into changes for the map. A working group, made up of Mr. John Consolati, Mr. John Grimley, and Mr. David Tomlinson, has been working for the last four months on reviewing maps from North America and Europe and soliciting input for changes from cyclists at the Bike Show, through the Toronto Bicycle Network, and from others. Their recommendations have been presented to the Network Planning and Facilities Sub-Committee, who added some additional recommendations.
