Communications Sub-Committee

During its meeting on Tuesday, August 31, 1999, the Communications Sub-Committee discussed the possibilities for communications activities between the Toronto Cycling Committee and the general public and other cycling groups. Cyclometer, last published in November, 1998, was felt to be an effective public-outreach tool. The Sub-Committee therefore concluded that continuing to produce Cyclometer would be one of its goals for 1999-2000. This publication would undergo some changes to give it a new look for the new Toronto Cycling Committee, and would continue to be available in an electronic version. A budget for this publication needs to be defined.

At present, the TCC has designated space on the City of Toronto web site. It is felt that having a separate web site with a link to the main City web site would enable us to undertake communications efforts more effectively. Communications could be presented according to TCC rather than City priorities and would make information more easily accessible to the general public.

In order to facilitate the editing, layout, printing, mailing and maintenance of a mailing list, staff support is essential. At present, this sub-committee does not have a designated staff person, and it was concluded that one is required for the sub-committee to function effectively. Without such support, the sub-committee's activities will be less efficient and may replicate or contradict communications efforts already in place at the City. In addition, a designated staff person would be invaluable in determining what resources are available to this sub-committee.

Finally, information is required regarding the budget available to this sub-committee for other initiatives. In order to plan for 1999-2000, an outline of available financial resources must be created.

The following recommendations are therefore made to the Toronto Cycling Committee:

  1. That funds be made available for the printing, mailing and distribution of Cyclometer;
  2. That a web site for the exclusive use of the TCC be created;
  3. That a staff person be designated for the Communications Sub-Committee to provide any needed support and resources;
  4. That an outline of available financial resources be created for the Communications Sub-Committee.

For example, charts, images and tables may be difficult to read. As such, readers should verify information before acting on it. All council documents are available from the City Clerk's office.
