Re:Notes from Special Meeting on Sept. 7, 1999 and Sept. 9, 1999

 The Education and Safety Subcommittee at its meeting held on Sept. 7, 1999 and Sept. 9, 1999, reviewed existing programs to determine future directions for the year 2000 and recommended that:

  1. a working group within the TCC (including CAN-BIKE instructors) develop a strategy to encourage School Board's to make cycling education a part of their curriculum
  2. the operation of the CAN-BIKE program be transferred to the Parks and Recreation Department, with interim support provided by the Urban Planning and Development Services for a one to two year transition period.
  3. Council be requested to rehire the vacant Commuter Cycling Coordinator position to handle promotion and development issues, including the Road and Trail Safety Ambassador Program and Bike Week.
  4. That the following program areas' objectives and goals be redefined/developed based on available resources:
    • Bike Week
    • Ambassador Program
    • Smog
    • Road Rage
    • Supporting utilitarian uses of the bicycle
    • Education associated with the introduction of cycling facilities
    • Yearly themes
