Subject:Variances to the Etobicoke Sign By-law

Purpose:

To advise Etobicoke Community Council of the decisions of the Sign Variance Advisory Committee at its meeting held on May 11, 1999.

Funding Sources, Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

Not applicable.

Recommendation:

That the recommendations of the Etobicoke Sign Variance Advisory Committee with respect to the following applications for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law be received for information:

(1)Thorncrest Plaza, 1500 Islington Avenue (Kingsway-Humber); and

(2)30 Vice-Regent Boulevard (Rexdale-Thistletown).

Comments and/or Discussion and/or Justification:

The Sign Variance Advisory Committee at its meeting held on Tuesday, May 11, 1999, had before it for consideration the following applications for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law. The Committee's decisions are as follows:

1.Thorncrest Plaza, 1500 Islington Avenue (Kingsway-Humber)

THAT an application for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law by Thorncrest Plaza, to permit the relocation of an existing illuminated identification ground sign to a location abutting the south property line and 1.37 m from the Islington Avenue property line at 1500 Islington Avenue, be approved subject to:

(i)the sign shall have a maximum display area of 14 mē and a maximum height above the average grade (147.04 m) of 10.76 m;

(ii)two yellow safety bollards, one bollard at the base of the sign closest to Islington Avenue, and one bollard 1 m north, 1.37 m from Islington Avenue;

(iii)a minimum of 2 m from the base plate to the underside of the display shall be left open and unobstructed; and

(iv)Toronto Transportation approval and issuance of a building permit prior to installation of the sign.

(2)30 Vice Regent Boulevard (Rexdale-Thistletown):

THAT an application for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law by Sasha Milenov, on behalf of the owners of 30 Vice Regent Boulevard, to permit the installation of a second identification ground sign incorporating a tenant directory, and having a display area of 6.4 m x 3.66 me, and a height of 8.54 m, be approved subject to:

(i)removal of all illegal banner type signs on the canopy roof and building walls;

(ii)approval by Toronto Transportation Department; and

(iii)issuance of a building permit.

The foregoing recommendations are in accordance with the attached reports from the Deputy Chief Building Official, Etobicoke District.
