Subject:Variances to the Etobicoke Sign By-law
Purpose:
To advise Etobicoke Community Council of the decisions of the Sign Variance Advisory Committee at its meeting held on
April 20, 1999.
Funding Sources, Financial Implications and Impact Statement:
Not applicable.
Recommendation:
That the recommendations of the Etobicoke Sign Variance Advisory Committee with respect to the following applications
for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law be received for information:
(1)Urban Outdoor Trans Ad, 3 Queensway Lions Court (Lakeshore-Queensway);
(2)Pizza Pizza, 130 Rexdale Boulevard (Rexdale-Thistletown);
(3)Petro Canada Service Stations, 830 Burnhamthorpe Road (Markland-Centennial);
(4)Investors Group, 295 The West Mall (Markland-Centennial); and
(5)Home Depot, 1983 Kipling Avenue (Rexdale-Thistletown).
Comments and/or Discussion and/or Justification:
The Sign Variance Advisory Committee at its meeting held on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, had before it for consideration the
following applications for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law. The Committee's decisions are as follows:
(1)Urban Outdoor Trans Ad, 3 Queensway Lions Court (Lakeshore-Queensway):
That an application by Urban Outdoor Trans Ad for a variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law to permit a Standard Outdoor
Advertising ground sign at 3 Queensway Lions Court, be refused.
(2)Pizza Pizza, 130 Rexdale Boulevard (Rexdale-Thistletown):
That an application for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law to permit a 6.69 m² rear wall identification fascia sign to
identify the Pizza Pizza location at 130 Rexdale Boulevard, be refused; and
That a variance be granted to allow an illuminated incidental fascia sign having a display area of 3.34 m².
(3)Petro Canada Service Stations, 830 Burnhamthorpe Road (Markland-Centennial):
That an application by Petro Canada for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law to permit the erection of a corporate logo
identification fascia sign on the face of the weather canopy at the Petro Canada location at 830 Burnhamthorpe Road, be
approved;
That the weather canopy fascia sign shall have a minimum display area of 3.55 m² and project a maximum of 1.049 m
above the roof of the weather canopy structure;
That this variance be extended to all Petro Canada service stations within the limits of the former City of Etobicoke; and
That a building permit be issued for each site prior to installation of the sign(s).
(4)Investors Group, 295 The West Mall (Markland-Centennial):
THAT an application by Pride Signs, on behalf of the Investors Group, for a variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law to
permit the installation of two mechanical penthouse fascia signs on the north and south sides of the building at 295 The
West Mall, each having a sign area of approximately 145 sq.ft.(3'6" x 41'4¼"), be approved; subject to:
(i)Ministry of Transportation approval; and
(ii)issuance of a building permit.
(5)Home Depot, 1983 Kipling Avenue (Rexdale-Thistletown):
That an application by Pride Signs, on behalf of Home Depot, for variance to the Etobicoke Sign By-law to permit the
installation of fascia signs on the west facade and south side wall facade of the Home Depot at 1983 Kipling Avenue, be
approved in accordance with the drawings submitted, as revised, subject to:
(i)Ministry of Transportation approval; and
(ii)issuance of a building permit.
The foregoing recommendations are in accordance with the attached reports from the Deputy Chief Building Official,
Etobicoke District.
