STAFF REPORT

October 22, 1999

To: North York Community Council

From: Joe Halstead, Commissioner Economic Development, Culture and Tourism

Subject: Proposed Renaming Of Stanley Community Centre To Domenic DiLuca Community Centre

North York Humber

Purpose:

To provide a recommended process that can be utilized with regard to the renaming of Stanley Community Centre in honour of the late Domenic DiLuca.

Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

There are no financial implications resulting from the adoption of this report.

Recommendations:

It is recommended that:

(1) the Department use the same criteria found in the Parkland Naming Policy, as approved by City Council on November 25, 26, 27, 1998, to proceed with the community consultation process to rename the Stanley Community Centre to the Domenic DiLuca Community Centre; and

(2) staff report back on the result of the community consultation at the February 15, 2000 meeting of North York Community Council.

Background:

Councillor Mammoliti has made a resolution to have Council consider the proposal to rename Stanley Community Centre to Domenic DiLuca Community Centre. Council has subsequently requested the Commissioner of Economic Development, Culture and Tourism prepare a report on this issue.

Domenic DiLuca passed away suddenly on August 26, 1999. He was a community minded individual who was instrumental in helping bring improvements to the Stanley Community Centre. He had been an organizing driving force and the President of the local Community Seniors Association. The local community has benefited by Domenic DiLuca's community involvement and his ongoing work with local Councillors and City officials.

Conclusions:

The Department recommends that Council give the direction to follow through with the proposed renaming of the Stanley Community Centre to the Domenic DiLuca Community Centre by using the criteria set out in the Parkland Naming Policy. The Department will report back to North York Community Council on February 15, 2000 on the results of the community consultation for the renaming of the community centre.
