June 7, 1999

To:Toronto Community Council

From:Angie Antoniou, Manager, Right of Way Management, Transportation Services, District 1

Subject:Maintenance of a Decorative Steel Trellis and Planter Walls - 920 King Street West (Trinity-Niagara)

Purpose:

To report on a request to maintain a decorative steel trellis archway over the driveway entrance to the property. The trellis is supported by a decorative planter wall on each side of the driveway within the public right of way fronting 920 King Street West. As there is no specific provision for this type of installation in Chapter 313, Streets and Sidewalks, of the former City of Toronto Municipal Code, I am required to report to your Committee.

Funding Sources, Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

Not applicable.

Recommendation:

That City Council approve the maintenance of the decorative steel trellis archway over the driveway entrance and decorative planter walls on each side of the driveway within the public right of way fronting 920 King Street West, subject to the owners entering into an agreement with the City of Toronto, as prescribed under Chapter 313 of the former City of Toronto Municipal Code.

Comments:

Mr. Stephen R. M. Wells, of Stephen R. M. Wells Architects, 289 Lisgar Street, Toronto, Ontario M6J 3H1, acting on behalf of the property owners, Gotham House Residences Inc., 797 King Street West, Toronto, Ontario M5V 1N4, requested permission to construct and maintain a decorative steel trellis archway over the driveway and planter walls on each side of the driveway within the public right of way fronting 920 King Street West. The trellis and planter walls have an overall width of 8.5m and the trellis extends to a vertical height of 4.3 m.

City staff have inspected the area in the immediate vicinity of this location and have determined that the decorative steel trellis and planter walls do not impact negatively on the area.

Conclusions:

As this decorative trellis and the planter walls do not negatively impact the public right of way, the decorative trellis and planter walls should be permitted to remain.
