Dear Betty:
In the aftermath of the snowstorm on January 2/3, 1999, my office and the offices of other
Scarborough area Councillors were swamped with hundreds of phone calls from irate
residents regarding the apparent deficiencies with our system of snow removal.
Due to the number of problems that were experienced by our residents, the members of
Scarborough Community Council met earlier today with senior members of the Works
Department responsible for the Scarborough area. As a result, staff has been instructed to
bring forward a report to the January 20, 1999 meeting of Scarborough Community Council,
to address the concerns raised by residents, and to suggest how changes can be made to avoid
similar problems in the future.
I would be surprised if other members of Council from across the City have not had a similar
experience, and I firmly believe that the policies and procedures governing this process should
be reviewed before we have a repeat performance. The most recent storm was predicted well
in advance of its arrival, and yet, the City's ability to deal with the situation has been seriously
challenged. Therefore, I would appreciate having this item placed on the agenda of the Works
and Utilities Committee for the meeting on January 14, 1999, and thank you in advance for
your time and consideration in this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Lorenzo Berardinetti
Chair, Scarborough Community Council
Councillor, Scarborough City Centre
