Subject: Reconstruction of Pavements, Sidewalks and Curbs on Ossington Avenue

Contract No. 59739

(Davenport)

Purpose:

To advise the Works Committee of an increase in cost of Contract No. 59737 Reconstruction on Ossington Avenue, and to request authorization for the additional funds.

Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

Funds to cover the additional cost of the work are available within Capital Accounts Toronto - Reconstruction of Pavement and Curb; and Sidewalks.

Recommendations:

It is recommended that approval be given for the expenditure of additional funds in the amount of $90,758.09, under Contract No. 59739.

Background:

Contract No. 59739 for the reconstruction of pavements, sidewalks and curbs on Ossington Avenue was awarded by the Bid Committee at its meeting on August 18, 1999 to Il Duca Construction Inc., in the amount of $978,664.85.

Since the Interim Financial Control By-law requires that expenditures beyond the awarded value of a contract be reported to City Council, this report is to authorize the additional expenditure.

Comments:

Reconstruction of Ossington Avenue commenced on August 30, 1999. During the course of excavation a concrete slab, streetcar tracks and wooden ties were found underneath the pavement. The extra work to breakout and remove the streetcar tracks was not anticipated and, as a result, a cost overrun of $90,758.09 was incurred.

Conclusions:

The final cost of Contract No. 59739 in the amount of $1,069,422.94 is in excess of the award by $90,758.09.

In accordance with the Interim Financial Control By-law, this matter is being referred to your Committee for authorization of the additional expenditure.
