Subject: Follow-up on Initiatives Addressing Youth Violence

Arising Out of the Mayor's Task Force on Youth Gangs

Recommendation:

The Community Services Committee on December 1, 1999, recommended to the Budget Advisory Committee the adoption of the recommendations contained in the attached report (November 26, 1999) from Councillor Olivia Chow, Child and Youth Advocate, with respect to follow-up initiatives addressing youth violence arising out of the Mayor's Task Force on Youth Gangs.

Background:

The Community Services Committee had before it a report:

- (November 30, 1999) from Councillor Olivia Chow, Child and Youth Advocate, advising that the Children and Youth Action Committee (CYAC) on November 30, 1999, recommended that:

(1) CYAC recommend to Budget Advisory Committee that funding for Youth Violence Prevention initiatives identified in this report be included in the Parks and Recreation, Library and Public Health, Police and TTC 2000 budget submissions;

(2) this report be forwarded to the Commissioners of Economic Development, Culture and Tourism, Community and Neighbourhood Services, Medical Officer of Health, and the General Manager of Toronto Public Library, and TTC with a request to report to the Budget Committee through their respective standing committee and/or boards, and to the Chief of Police to report to the Toronto Police Services Board on the implementation details, including budget requirements as part of the 2000 budget process;

(3) the City continue to work with various non-profit agencies that have successful youth anti-violence programs;

(4) the City continue to seek funding from other levels of government and private foundations to support youth anti-violence programs; and

(5) the appropriate City officials be authorized and directed to take the necessary action to give effect thereto.
