March 15, 2000

To: Toronto Cycling Committee

From: Sean Wheldrake, Bicycle Promotion Coordinator

Subject: Report on the Bicycle Show

The Toronto International Bicycle Show was from Friday March 3 to Sunday March 5, 2000. The Toronto Cycling Committee had booth number 15 in the National Trade Centre, Hall B, Exhibition Place.

I would like to thank the Toronto Cycling Committee members who volunteered for the bike show. I would also like to thank the other City staff who helped make the booth a success. I received very positive comments about the Toronto Cycling Committee booth.

During the Bike Show, information seminars were held in a presentation room beside the show office. The following seminars were held during the bike show: Master Cycling Plan Study, Bike Week, Get Ready for Spring Cycling (CAN-BIKE info), and Bike Map/combining Bikes and Buses. Craig Barnes held three seminars on Bike Week and spoke to 20 people. I do not have numbers for all the seminars. This was the first year the Toronto Cycling Committee held seminars at the Bike Show.

The Toronto Cycling Committee booth had three display boards: Cycling Master Plan; Toronto Cycling Map; and the Toronto Cycling Committee programs and information display. There was also three tables at the booth. The tables had the Poem & the Bottles display, Cycling Master Plan hand out, the Cycling trail in Rail and Hydro Corridors hand out and information on many other programs.

The Toronto Cycling Map was popular and was a centrepiece to the booth. Thousands of maps were given away and this helped attract attention to the other displays in the booth. It is recommended to have the maps to give away again next year.

There was some media attention during the show with two interviews occurring. The Toronto Sun and The National Post may run articles in the future based on interviews conducted during the Bike Show.

The results for the "I hate it when...." bottles display are:

Message Money Collected

Bikers ride against the flow of traffic or ride towards me in the bike lane $ 1.30

Adult cyclists ride on the sidewalk $ 0.46

Pedestrians start to cross without looking $ 0.11

Cyclists don't wear a helmet $ 0.01

Cyclists ride without lights at night $ 0.25

My bike is not allowed on public transit vehicles $ 0.00

I am told to "Get off the road!" $ 3.00

There is no bike parking $ 0.21

A sewer grate grabs my wheel $ 0.02

I choke on exhaust $ 2.10

I am swallowed by pot holes $ 0.03

Cyclists run red lights $ 0.32

I get the "door prize" $ 3.25

I get cut off $ 0.00

Total $11.06

COMMENTS ON THE BOTTLES DISPLAY:

· One observer mentioned: "Why not have more positive messages displayed for people to respond to…messages that begin with "I like it when…." instead of "I hate it when…" which is so negative!"

· Some observers found the display confusing, they didn't understand what they were supposed to do, even after reading the poem.

If you have any comments on the Bike Show let me know or come out to the next Promotions and Communications Sub Committee meeting.

Sincerely,

Sean Wheldrake
