Subject: Festivals Regarding the International Year of the Older Persons

All Wards

Purpose:

To report on events and activities that took place to celebrate International Year of Older Persons

Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

There were no financial implications resulting from the adoption of this report.

Recommendations:

It is recommended that this report be received for information.

Background:

The United Nations designated 1999 as the International Year of the Older Persons. The goals of the year were to enhance understanding, harmony and mutual support across generations; to increase recognition of seniors' contributions to their families and communities; and to encourage all sectors of society to be responsive to the ageing population.

Canada's theme for 1999 International Year of the Older Persons was "Canada is a society for all ages". The City of Toronto had its International Year of the Older Persons kick off in October, 1998, at Toronto City Hall. This event was officiated by Mayor Mel Lastman.

To mark this important year, City Council organized a senior task force with representation from all districts. The task force made fifty-five recommendations, which are being implemented.

At the June 21, 1999, meeting of Economic Development and Parks Committee, a report was requested on the events which took place to mark the International Year of the Older Persons and how the City could support these types of activities. A detailed list of events held in 1999 in the various Districts is attached.

Conclusions:

Staff became involved with the various Seniors Groups and Centres and co-ordinated the activities for the enjoyment of all Older Persons during the year.
