Purpose:
To respond to the Economic Development and Parks Committee's request to report on a Plan for Culture, Arts and
Heritage.
Financial Implications and Impact Statement:
There are no financial implications resulting from the adoption of this report.
Recommendations:
It is recommended that:
(1) the Culture Division, in consultation with the Toronto Arts Council, report to the May 15, 2000 Economic
Development and Parks Committee meeting on the plan for Culture, Arts and Heritage Division and;
(2) the appropriate City Officials be authorized and directed to take the necessary action to give effect thereto.
Background:
At its meeting of November 29, 1999, Economic Development and Parks Committee had before it a communication from
Councillor David Soknacki in which he requested that the Managing Director of Culture, Arts and Heritage Division be
requested to present to the Economic Development and Parks Committee prior to 1 March, 2000 a plan for the Culture,
Arts and Heritage Division. This plan to include:
an outreach program to community arts organizations which has substantive participation from them in the overall strategy
and implementation of the Division's plan;
a plan for how applications for funding will be evaluated and granted in the upcoming year, especially with respect to
giving real consideration to applicants not now receiving funding, and providing evidence that the granting process is
transparent, fair and accessible;
recommendations for a Culture policy to include funding accessible public art.
Conclusion:
With the restructuring and staffing of the Culture Division a report will be prepared and submitted to Economic
Development and Parks Committee for the May 15, 2000 meeting.
