Subject: Parking Concerns - Iron Street
(Rexdale-Thistledown)
Purpose:
To propose the introduction of a No Parking Anytime Prohibition on both sides of Iron Street between Belfield Road and
Highway 409.
Funding Sources:
The funds associated with the introduction of the appropriate regulatory signage are contained in the Transportation
Services Division's Operating Budget.
Recommendations:
It is recommended that:
(1) a No Parking Anytime Prohibition be implemented for both sides of Iron Street, between Belfield Road and Highway
409; and
(2) the appropriate City Officials be authorized and directed to take the necessary action to give effect thereto.
Background:
Correspondence was received from Mr. Ed Vanderaa, Plant Manager, Lipton, a division of U L Canada, 195 Belfield Road,
and Mr. David Winkelman, Vice President, Rollins Leasing Company of Canada, 205 Belfield Road, requesting that
parking be prohibited on both sides of Iron Street between Belfield Road and Highway 409 (Attachment No.1). Their
request is as a result of periodic parking of large vehicles (containers and trailers) on the paved boulevard section of
Iron Street, which causes the obstruction of the view of northbound and southbound traffic, for vehicles exiting the
driveways from the adjacent industries. A secondary concern is the damage that these parked vehicles have caused the road
shoulder and the chain-link fence along the Lipton property frontage.
Currently, parking is prohibited anytime on the west side of Iron Street between a point 90.0 metres south of Belfield Road
and a point 82.0 metres south thereof. A map of the area is Attachment No. 2.
Comments:
Staff of the District Transportation Services Division investigated the complaints received from the abutting industries.
Review of the traffic operational characteristics of the road and the parking conditions witnessed over a period of time,
confirmed the problems being experienced by the complainants. Implementing the No Parking Anytime Prohibition for this
section of Iron Street will alleviate the concerns of the businesses in the area and will provide for a safer road operating
environment.
Conclusions:
The introduction of a No Parking Anytime prohibition on both sides of Iron Street will address both the sight line and
property damage issues raised by U L Canada and Rollins Leasing.
