December 17, 1999

To: East York Community Council

From: W. (Wally) Kowalenko, City Surveyor, Works and Emergency Services

Subject: Naming of Proposed Public Streets at 1590 O'Connor Drive

(East York)

Purpose:

This report recommends that the names "Blair Street", "Guillet Street", "Skopje Gate" and "Tucker Street" be authorized for use on the Draft Plan of Subdivision for the proposed residential development at 1590 O'Connor Drive.

Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

There are no financial implications resulting from the adoption of this report.

Recommendations:

It is recommended that:

the names "Blair Street", "Guillet Street", "Skopje Gate" and "Tucker Street", illustrated on "Attachment No. 1", be approved for the proposed public streets at 1590 O'Connor Drive; and

(1) the appropriate City Officials be authorized and directed to take the necessary action to give effect thereto.

Background:

The proposed names were chosen by the East York Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee, Councillor Michael Prue and the East York Historical Society. The developer of the site, The Goldman Group (55 St. Clair Avenue West, Suite 240, Toronto, M4V 2Y7) also supports the use of the names. The names have been chosen to honour the following individuals and to recognize a sister city.

Blair Street - former mayor of East York

Guillet Street - well known author and Ontario historian who lived in the area

Tucker Street - former long-term clerk for East York

Skopje Gate - sister city of East York in Macedonia

Comments:

The names have been circulated to Councillor Case Ootes, Councillor Jane Pitfield and Toronto Fire Services for comment. The names have the support of Toronto Fire Services.

Conclusions:

The proposed names are not duplicated in the City of Toronto and should be approved for the proposed public streets at the development at 1590 O'Connor Drive.
