STAFF REPORT

December 29, 1999

To: North York Community Council

From: Roberto Stopnicki, Director, Transportation Services, District 3

Subject: Parking Prohibitions: Chipping Road

(Don Parkway)

Purpose:

To introduce a "No Parking, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday to Friday" parking prohibition on Chipping Road, from Don Mills Road to Crossburn Drive.

Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

All costs associated with the implementation of parking restrictions are included within the Division's operating budget.

Recommendations:

It is recommended that Schedule VIII of By-law No. 31001, of the former City of North York, be amended to prohibit parking on both sides of Chipping Road, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, from a point 30 meters east of Don Mills Road to Crossburn Drive.

Background:

Staff of the Transportation Services Division has reviewed a request by local residents to implement parking prohibitions to address the continuous on street parking by students of Seneca College.

Currently, parking is permitted for up to a maximum period of three hours on Chipping Road. On several of the adjacent roadways, parking is prohibited between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Comments:

Observations by staff of this division support the residents concerns as numerous vehicles were parked on the roadway. These vehicles often restricted the flow of two-way traffic.

Previous requests to the Toronto Police Services for enforcement of the three-hour limits has proven ineffective in reducing the on street parking.

Conclusions:

Although weekday daytime on-street parking would be eliminated, the introduction of the parking restrictions would address the concerns of the local residents. Evening and weekend parking would be available.
