 STAFF REPORT

March 3, 2000

To: North York Community Council

From: Roberto Stopnicki, Director, transportation Services, District 3

Subject:Parking Prohibitions: Longmore Street

(North York Centre)

Purpose:

To prohibit parking on both sides of Longmore Street, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, from Empress Avenue to Hillcrest Avenue.

Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

All costs associated with the installation of the parking restrictions are included within this Division's Operating Budget.

Recommendations:

It is recommended that Schedule VIII of By-law No. 31001, of the former City of North York, be amended to prohibit parking on both sides of Longmore Street, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, from Empress Avenue to Hillcrest Avenue.

Background:

The Transportation Services Division of the Works and Emergency Services Department reviewed a request from local residents to restrict daytime parking on both sides of Longmore Street, between Empress Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue. This request was made as a result of the excessive daytime parking by students from Earl Haig Secondary School.

Currently, parking is permitted for up to a maximum of three hours on both sides of Longmore Street, between Church Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue. There are various posted parking prohibitions on the remaining sections of Longmore Street.

 Comments:

Our investigations have verified that numerous vehicles are parked consistently on both sides of Longmore Street, between Empress Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue. These parked vehicles restrict the flow of two way traffic and reduce visibility for motorists while exiting from their driveways. Despite numerous requests to the Toronto Police Services for enforcement of the three hour parking limit, motorists continue to park daily on both sides of the street.

Councillors John Filion and Norman Gardner have advised that they support the implementation of parking prohibitions.

Conclusion:

The implementation of parking prohibitions will improve traffic operations on Longmore Street and will address the daytime parking concerns of the residents.
