STAFF REPORT
March 6, 2000
To: North York Community Council
From: Roberto Stopnicki, Director, Transportation Services, District 3
Subject:Reduced Speed Zone: De Vere Gardens
(North York Center South)
Purpose:
To implement a 40 km/h speed limit on De Vere Gardens from Mason Boulevard to a point 150 metres west and south.
Financial Implications and Impact Statement:
All costs associated with the installation of a reduced speed zone on De Vere Gardens are included within this Division's
Operating Budget.
Recommendations:
It is recommended that By-law No. 31878, of the former City of North York, be amended to regulate the maximum rate of
speed on De Vere Gardens, from Mason Boulevard to a point 150 metres west and southerly thereof, at 40 km/h.
Background:
Currently, there is a 40 km/h speed limit on Mason Boulevard, from Eastview Crescent to the north limit of Mason
Boulevard. De Vere Gardens is the natural continuation of Mason Boulevard.
The former City of North York By-law No. 31878 allowed for the introduction of reduced speed zones on streets which
either front or flank on primary and junior high schools, and that the zones extend 150 metres in each direction beyond the
boundary of the school property.
Comment:
In reviewing existing conditions, it was determined that the reduced speed zone does not comply with the current policy.
Specifically, the reduced speed zone ends at the north limits of the school property.
Conclusion:
The implementation of the 40 km/h speed zone on De Vere Gardens, from the northerly limit of Mason Boulevard to a
point 150 metres westerly and southerly thereof, will provide better awareness to motorists that they are approaching a
school.
