To: Striking Committee

From: City Clerk

Subject: Appointments to Heritage Toronto and the Toronto Preservation Board.

Purpose:

To implement Council's process for appointing Members of Council to Heritage Toronto and the Toronto Preservation Board.

Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

Not applicable.

Recommendations:

It is recommended that:

(1) the Striking Committee give consideration to Members' preferences outlined in Schedule 1, and recommend to City Council the appointment of Members of Council to:

(i) Heritage Toronto; and

(ii) Toronto Preservation Board

for a term of office expiring November 30, 2000, and until their successors are appointed; and

(2) the appropriate City Officials be authorized and directed to take the necessary action to give effect thereto.

Background:

City Council, at its meeting held on April 13, 14 and 15, 1999, by its adoption, as amended, of Clause No. 2 of Report No. 6 of the Economic Development Committee, headed "Implementation of Council Decisions on Heritage Governance", established the composition of various heritage bodies. Subsequently at its meeting of November 25, 1999, by its enactment of By-law 794-1999, Council revised the powers of the Toronto Historical Board and provided for it to be known as Heritage Toronto, and provided for the appointment of members thereto; and by its enactment of By-law 795-1999, established the Toronto Preservation Board and provided for the appointment of members thereto.

Comments:

Members of Council were recently canvassed to determine their respective interest in these appointments. The attached Schedule 1 contains a list of those Members who have indicated an interest in these appointments.

Conclusions:

It is recommended that the Striking Committee give consideration to Members' preferences outlined in Schedule 1, and recommend to City Council the appointment of Members of Council to Heritage Toronto and the Toronto Preservation Board.
