Appointments - Hockey Hall of Fame and the
St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts
The Striking Committee recommends as follows:
(1) Hockey Hall of Fame, Board of Directors:
(Three Members of Council to be appointed, one of whom may be named as the
Mayor's representative if Council so wishes)
The Striking Committee recommends that:
(i) the following Members of Council be nominated for election to the Hockey Hall of
Fame, Board of Directors:
D. Holyday (as the Mayor's representative)
J. Flint
C. Korwin-Kuczynski
for a term of office commencing at the Annual Meeting of the of the Hockey Hall of
Fame scheduled to be held on March 28, 2000, and expiring on November 30, 2000,
and until their successors are appointed; and
(ii) the new City of Toronto Council be requested to give consideration to continuing
the appointments of the foregoing Members of Council until the Annual Meeting of the
Hockey Hall of Fame in the Spring 2001.
(2) St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts:
(One Member of Council to be appointed)
The Striking Committee recommends that:
(i) the resignation of Councillor Joe Pantalone from the St. Lawrence Centre for the
Arts, Board of Management, be accepted; and
(ii) Councillor Maria Augimeri be appointed to replace Councillor Pantalone on such
Board of Management for a term of office expiring November 30, 2000, and until her
successor is appointed.
The Striking Committee submits the following report (January 25, 2000) from the City
Clerk:
Purpose:
To advise Council of Councillor Joe Pantalone's resignation from the St. Lawrence
Centre for the Arts, Board of Management, and to provide Members of Council with a
list of Members' preferences for appointment to the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts
and the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Financial Implications and Impact Statement:
Not applicable.
Recommendations:
It is recommended that:
(1) the Striking Committee submit to Council, for its consideration, Councillor Pantalone's
resignation from the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Board of Management;
(2) the Striking Committee give consideration to Members' preferences outlined in
Schedule 1, and recommend to City Council the appointment of Members of Council
to the following Boards:
(i) Hockey Hall of Fame, Board of Directors; and
(ii) St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Board of Management, upon the acceptance of
Councillor Pantalone's resignation from such Board; and
(3) the appropriate City Officials be authorized and directed to take the necessary
action to give effect thereto.
Background:
(i) Hockey Hall of Fame, Board of Directors:
City Council at its meeting held on February 2, 3 and 4, 1999, by its adoption, as
amended, of Clause No. 1 of Report No. 1 of the Striking Committee, nominated the
following Members of Council for appointment to the Hockey Hall of Fame, Board of
Directors, for a term of office expiring at the next Annual Meeting, now scheduled for
March 28, 2000:
J. Flint
D. Holyday (Mayor's Representative)
C. Korwin-Kuczynski.
The City Clerk is in receipt of a letter dated January 11, 2000, from the Secretary and
General Counsel of the Hockey Hall of Fame, requesting written notice of the City of
Toronto's nominations no later than Friday, February 4, 2000, for election at the
March 28, 2000 Annual Meeting for a term of office expiring at the Annual Meeting of
the Board in the Spring 2001.
The Hockey Hall of Fame has advised that since such upcoming term of office runs
past this term of Council, the City of Toronto could nominate its candidates, if it so
wishes, for a term expiring on November 30, 2000, and until their successors are
appointed, at which time the incoming Council could decide whether it wished to
continue or amend these appointments, if necessary.
(ii) St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Board of Management:
City Council at its meeting held on May 11 and 12, 1999, by its adoption, as amended,
of Clause No. 1 of Report No. 6 of the Striking Committee, appointed the following
Members of Council to the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Board of Management, for
a term of office expiring November 30, 2000, and until their successors are appointed:
J. Pantalone
K. Rae.
The City Clerk is now in receipt of a communication dated January 5, 2000, from
Councillor Joe Pantalone resigning from the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Board
of Management, so it will be necessary for City Council to appoint another
representative to replace Councillor Pantalone.
Comments:
Members of Council were recently canvassed to determine their respective interest in
the aforementioned appointments. The attached Schedule 1 contains a list of those
Members who have indicated an interest in such appointments.
Conclusions:
It is recommended that the Striking Committee give consideration to Members'
preferences outlined in Schedule 1, and recommend to City Council the appointment
of Members of Council to the Hockey Hall of Fame, Board of Directors, and the St.
Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Board of Management, upon the acceptance of
Councillor Pantalone's resignation from such Board of Management.

from Mr. John R. Dow, Secretary and General Counsel, Hockey Hall of Fame:
In accordance with By-law No. 9 of the Corporation (as amended by By-law No. 12),
the City of Toronto is entitled to nominate three (3) persons for election to the
Corporation's Board of Directors.
Please provide written notice of the City of Toronto's nominations for election at the
March 28, 2000 annual general meeting by no later than Friday, February 4, 2000. All
relevant documents, including official meeting notices, will be circulated shortly after
we receive nominations.

from Councillor Joe Pantalone, Trinity Niagara:
I am writing to submit my resignation as City Council's appointee on the St. Lawrence
Centre for the Arts Board of Management.
Regretfully, and despite my best intentions, I find that the S.T.L.C.'s schedule conflicts
with my other City of Toronto responsibilities and appointments. Consequently, I am
unable to attend the S.T.L.C.'s scheduled meetings.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
The Striking Committee also submits the following communication (February 1, 2000)
from Councillor Mario Giansante, Kingsway-Humber:
I would request that my name be withdrawn for consideration for appointment to the
Hockey Hall of Fame, Board of Directors, and I wish to lend my support to the three
Councillors who presently serve on the Board.
